Why the off-season works

Build in winter, enjoy it all spring

Cool soil, settled roots

NC State Extension notes that tree and shrub roots grow most actively in cool weather, in fall and again from late winter into early spring, so plants settle in before summer heat.

In your yard in January, not June

The trucks and the digging happen while you’re indoors, so the heavy work is behind you when you want to be outside.

Skip the spring line

Spring is our busiest season. Book now and your design is done and your install is on the calendar first.

What we build in winter

Most of the work goes in now

Built over the winter

  • Trees and shrubs, planted dormant
  • Flagstone patios and walkways
  • Paver patios
  • Block and boulder retaining walls
  • Drainage and grading
  • Drip irrigation
  • Mortared stonework in mild stretches

Waits for its window

  • Polymeric joint sand on paver patios
  • Sod and seed
  • Late-season perennials

These get one short spring visit, and we tell you up front which parts of your project need it.

How winter weather works with us. If the ground is frozen or soaked, we wait. Stone, planting and drainage go in on workable days. If any part of your project needs a warmer day to finish, we’ll tell you up front.

Winter install FAQ

Questions we hear

Can you really plant in winter?

Yes, on workable days. Trees and shrubs go in while they’re dormant, and their roots keep growing in cool soil, in fall and again from late winter into spring. If the ground is frozen or soaked, we wait.

What if it snows?

We pause and pick back up on the next workable day. Most winter afternoons in Asheville are above freezing, so the schedule keeps moving.

Will my lawn be torn up?

We protect what we can and put back what we disturb as part of the job. Anything that needs warmer weather to finish, like seed or sod, gets one short spring visit.

Do you do design?

Yes. Our in-house designers handle it. Smaller projects are planned at the site visit; bigger ones get a paid design consult and plan, quoted before we start.

Do I need irrigation?

Drip irrigation is the surest way to get new plants through their first summer. We can install it or add drip to the system you already have.

Design it now. Enjoy it next spring.
